A small tweak in BlackRock's model portfolio turned a sleepy fund into one of the market's fastest growing active ETFs overnight. BlackRock added the U.S. Equity Factor Rotation ETF (DYNF) to its target allocation model portfolio in mid-March. The growth of DYNF sits at the center of two broader trends — rapid growth of model portfolios and the proliferation of active ETFs. Model portfolios are strategies offered by asset managers to investors and financial advisors. Meanwhile, model portfolios that want to add active management may not be able to add the best-performers in a category.

Pinpoint Asset Management is a Hong Kong-based hedge fund with offices in Shanghai and Singapore. According to HSBC's Hedge Weekly report, the firm's China fund gained more than 2% through the first two weeks of April to bring its year-to-date returns to just under 8%. The firm's multi-strategy fund was up 1.8% for the month through April 15, to bring its 2024 gains to 6%. The China fund had a run of poor performance given the country's economic slowdown. The performance so far in 2024 has beaten out other funds focused on the region — Hedge Fund Research's China index was up just 0.43% through the end of March.

Trillions of tons of lightweight, energy-dense hydrogen gas may be hidden deep underground. Those natural reservoirs, known as geologic hydrogen, could be a fruitful carbon-free fuel source. Oil and gas giants BP and Chevron have joined a consortium to study geologic hydrogen. That's when an oil and gas company assessed a mine that had exploded in Mali and found it was full of hydrogen gas. In the US, two long stretches of this rock are a promising place to look for hydrogen reserves, and efforts are already underway.

Quant funds, including Qube and Renaissance Technologies, have started strong in 2024. Under-the-radar Qube Research and Technologies started its encore to its stellar 2023. The largest fund at the $14 billion quant manager was up roughly 10% in January, sources familiar told Business Insider. The London-based manager run by CEO Pierre-Yves Morlat and CIO Laurent Laizet led the way in what was generally a strong month for quant funds. According to Hedge Fund Research, the average systematic fund betting on equities made 1.8% in January, besting the S&P 500 and the average hedge fund, which were up 1.6% and 0.2%, respectively.

That dozens of funds — the firm currently has 28 different partner funds that feed data into the strategy plus a waitlist of five other managers — would share their holdings is novel. The average hedge fund was up 7.5%, according to Hedge Fund Research. The managers who have partnered with CenterBook, Stemerman said, have a long time horizon — think months instead of days — on their trades, so the edge isn't lost if CenterBook also makes the same trade in its book. CenterBook, if assets grow as expected, aims to bring on another 10 partner funds this year, the source close to management tells Business Insider. While the manager has only 18 full-time employees, its partner funds have more than 100 investment analysts working at them.

Despite billions leaving the firm, Lone Pine Capital ended strong last year. The manager was down 38% and 42% in its hedge fund and long-only strategy, respectively, last year. Bloomberg reported in August that clients had pulled roughly $3 billion out of the firm in the 12 months leading up to July 2023. The firm's strong 2023 performance bested the average hedge fund, which returned less than 8%, according to Hedge Fund Research. The minutes will likely include the "superficially hawkish rhetoric" that rates might still move higher, Citi analysts wrote on Sunday in a preview of the release. But "we continue to think that Fed officials are most likely done raising rates this cycle." "Inflation does seem to be settling," Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin told Fox Business on Monday. But he also felt it was likely to remain "stubborn, and that makes the case for me for being higher for longer." "What I would be looking for is sustained evidence" of inflation in steady decline, Boston Fed President Susan Collins said last week.

Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell answers a question at a press conference following a closed two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee on interest rate policy at the Federal Reserve in Washington, U.S., November 1, 2023. The fight to restore price stability "has a long way to go," the Fed chair said. Going forward, "it may be that a greater share of the progress in reducing inflation will have to come from tight monetary policy restraining the growth of aggregate demand," Powell said. "Supply shocks that have a persistent effect on potential output could call for restrictive policy to better align aggregate demand with the suppressed level of aggregate supply," he said. Merger Arbitrage hedge funds gained 4.4% in the third quarter, standing out as the best-performing strategy for the period, beating every category in event-driven, equity, macro and value funds, according to Hedge Fund Research . "The merger arbitrage strategy has historically thrived in a rising interest rate environment when an investor's fixed income portfolio may have suffered losses," said Michael Peck, co-chief investment officer at First Trust. As the proposed deal nears completion, the target's stock typically rises and the acquirer's shares fall. This short-term trading strategy often utilized by fast-money hedge funds typically involves multiple long and short positions, and might be too sophisticated for the average individual investor. The First Trust Merger Arbitrage ETF (MARB) and the IQ Merger Arbitrage ETF (MNA) are two popular ones that capitalize on the technique.

Risky biotech M&A therapy will heal more fractures

NEW YORK, Oct 19 (Reuters Breakingviews) - How can a suitor offering $1 billion see eye-to-eye with a seller asking for $2 billion? Such contingent value rights, or CVRs, are a way to get around the inherent uncertainty of an unproven drug. Its $74 billion takeover of Celgene in 2019 included a $6.4 billion payout dependent on a trio of drug approvals. There have been only 27 biotech market debuts this year, raising $2.2 billion, according to LSEG data. Given the nagging fissures in valuation perspectives, however, more dealmakers are apt to try this risky M&A therapy.

Princeton University earned the top spot on both The Wall Street Journal's and U.S. News and World Report's rankings for 2024. The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom was named the best university in the world for the eighth year in a row, according to Times Higher Education's ranking of over 1,900 universities worldwide. Oxford, the world's second-oldest university, continues to be a global leader in academic research and instruction nine centuries after its conception. Times Higher Education uses metrics across five areas — teaching, research environment, research quality, industry innovations and international outlook — to rank universities around the world. Though the U.S. doesn't hold the top spot, the next three best-ranked universities are American — but the two highest-ranked ones aren't Ivy League schools.

NEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management returned nearly 3% in the first nine months of the year, investors said on Tuesday, as his bet on Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) contributed to the activist hedge fund lagging its peers' returns. Some blue-chip activist investors, including Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management and Jeff Smith's Starboard Value, are posting better numbers. Sept 25 (Reuters) - Ladbrokes owner Entain (ENT.L) warned on its online net gaming revenues for the third quarter and the full-year on Monday, as the British gambling firm grapples with ongoing regulation in the industry, particularly in the UK, and slower growth in Australia and Italy. The owner of online brands bwin and partypoker, said it expects third-quarter online net gaming revenue to be down by "high single digit percent" on a pro-forma basis. It also expects group online gaming revenue for the full year to be down "low single digit percent" on a pro-forma basis. Meanwhile, sports-betting service BetMGM, which Entain jointly owns with MGM Resorts (MGM.N) was on track to report positive core profit in the second half and full-year gaming revenues at the top end of its expectations, the British company said. It's a sad irony, but an irony nonetheless, that this week the European Space Agency announced that a piece of space debris — left in orbit by a 2013 launch of Arianespace's Vega rocket and the target of a removal mission — appears to have been struck by other space debris. But the ISS itself may have to dodge space debris this afternoon, with station controllers considering changing its altitude. The risk posed by space debris is not a novel problem for the industry, but it's an ever more pressing one. Satellites and space debris are largely tracked via ground-based radars and telescopes. Debris removal is a nascent part of the broader satellite servicing market (also known as In-Space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing, or ISAM).

Samsung's 11-year-old investment in ASML has been hugely lucrative. Over the past decade, ASML shares have delivered a whopping 25% annualised return to its shareholders.
